A break of structure (BOS) sounds simple until you sit with a live chart and realise half the wicks on your screen look like breaks. In our Intensive we define BOS as a confirmed close beyond the last relevant swing point in the direction of the new leg — not a pierce, not a single-tick spike.

Step 1: Identify the swing you are breaking

Before asking "did structure break," label the swing high or swing low that matters. On an uptrend pullback, that is usually the most recent lower high before price pushes up. On VN-index daily charts we require the swing to be visible on the timeframe you trade — do not mark a BOS on daily using a swing that only exists on M15.

Step 2: Apply the body-close rule

We teach body close, not wick. If the candle wicks above a prior high but the body settles below, structure has not broken bullishly. Students often resist this because wicks feel dramatic on screen. Print the chart — body close is easier to judge on paper.

Step 3: Run the three confirmation checks

  1. Sequence integrity: The prior leg must show at least one clear HH and HL (for bullish BOS) before the break point.
  2. No overlapping ambiguity: If the "break" candle also forms a lower low on the same bar, pause — you may be looking at expansion, not BOS.
  3. Follow-through: Ideally the next one to two candles hold beyond the broken level. We do not require perfection, but a immediate full retrace suggests a liquidity grab instead.

Common misread from homework

The most frequent markup error is calling BOS on the first green candle after a long red streak without checking whether that candle actually closed above the last lower high. Another is using trend lines drawn through wick extremes instead of labelled swings.

Practice suggestion

Take three daily charts from your watchlist — one index, one liquid HOSE name, one FX pair. Mark only swings for a week without trading. On day eight, circle every bar that satisfies all three checks. Compare with a cohort partner if you can.
